Disney Picks: Epcot

Epcot was the second of four parks to open that make up Disney World. The park opened in October of 1982. The theme park is part international culture and part technological innovation. For those purposes, the park is divided into two "worlds." Future World focusing on the technology and innovation aspects and World Showcase, giving guest a taste of international culture.

Future World is where guest will find the "thrill" attractions, and where I will start with my picks. Keep in mind that Epcot offers an enormous amount of activities along with their annual events ( Upcoming: International Flower and Garden show March 18-May 31,2009) for guest. I am merely highlighting what I view as have-to-experience attractions.

Topping my list is Soarin'! Soarin' is an approximately 5 minute hand gliding simulator attraction located in THE LAND pavilion of Future World. Soarin' takes guest on a simulated hand gliding tour of the many sights(and smells) of the great state of California. Highlights include, San Fancisco, the Napa Valley and flight over Disneyland! This extremely popular attraction opened in May of 2005. My advice? Get your FAST PASS for this attraction right when you enter Epcot. Lines and wait times can be extremely long otherwise! For those who must endure the wait in the stand by line,Disney has utilized some infrared technology to offer guest an interactive experience to participate in while waiting. I highly recommend this attraction--miss it and you have really missed out on one of the most amazing experiences Disney offers! Side note: look for the hidden Mickey on the golf ball!

After an awesome hand gliding experience, how about getting in the drivers seat at Test Track? My number 2 Epcot pick. Test Track puts guest in a test car that endures a series of test via a mock -up "GM testing facility" The Test Track GM building is full of test crash dummies, cars and car parts. Guest will view an array of testing procedures used on vehicles, as they make their way through the stand-by line to the briefing room of the attraction. After a short briefing, guest are led to their test cars. Your test vehicle will undergo testing of suspension and anti lock brakes along with a series of environmental testing in the areas of corrosion, heat and the cold. The biggest thrill to this attraction is the track that can be seen surrounding the building. To be more accurate, its the final "barrier test" which puts guests test vehicles on the outside track for a lap around the building at speeds over 60 mph. If you thought you were having a bad hair day before you entered the park, take a look at yourself AFTER Test Track! It's definitely a rush!

For a really intense, out of this world experience, I highly recommend Mission Space. Mission Space is Disneys most advanced simulator attraction. So advanced they have to offer two options for guest. Orange team (more intense) and Green Team (less intense.) The attraction simulates a human mission to Mars, beginning with your shuttle lift off, followed by a sling shot around the moon and finally, your landing on Mars. Each guest is assigned a specific task to complete while on their mission ( Navigator, Pilot, commander or engineer). Forget what to do? no problem..auto pilot kicks in to complete the task! Be aware that this attraction generates up to 3g's and can spin at 35 MPH. The spinning is used to create the sensation of speed and G forces. Disney recommends those who are prone to motion sickness consider the alternative "Green Team" experience which does not involve any spinning or simulation of G forces. I always go with the full experience Orange team and recommend you give it a try. I have yet to get sick nor has anyone in my "flight team" get sick. Sickness bags are however, provided in each capsule if needed.

OK, my next pick you saw from the road--you have to go inside it! Spaceship Earth is one of most recognizable attractions throughout all of the Disney parks..yes that's the "Big Ball." The 18 story sphere houses a dark ride which transports guest through time and details the history of communication and how, along with technology, it creates our future. Audio-Animotronics are used to create scenes throughout history to tell this story. As a side note, you may recognize the voice of the narrator for this attraction as actress Judi Dench. The attraction begins in prehistoric times and transports you to the dawn of the 21st century. Additionally, Spaceship Earth allows guest to "create" their own futures in a pretty cool interactive feature.Be sure to check out "Project Tomorrow" when exiting the attraction for other interactive games and displays. You can even email a video to friends from here!

Excitement and the thrill of technology are all great, but for something that moves at a slower pace, head over to World Showcase. World Showcase is a multi-cultural experience. Guest are given the opportunity to discover the beauty and distinctiveness of eleven separate pavilions representing Mexico, Norway,China, Germany, Italy, USA, Japan, Morraco, France, The United Kingdom and Canada. Each of the 11 pavilions is staffed by actual citizens of the represented country . You will find authentic cuisine and merchandise at each pavilion as well. For those who enjoy international shopping and dining- this is definitely for you! I recommend checking out each individual pavilion. Take in each countries culture, speak to the native cast members about their country, try the food! How often do you get an opportunity for international "sampling" if you will. Along with the art, food and merchandise both China and Canada also offer circle vision 360 presentations. Boat attractions are also offered at Norway (Maelstrom) and Mexico ( Gran Fiesta Tour/Three Caballeros). All worth a look while strolling through World Showcase.

The finale to your visit to Epcot should include attendance of "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth" the 13 minute show is a collaboration of lasers, fireworks, water fountains and fire itself. Most notable in IlluniNations is the large rotating globe composed of multiple LCD screens. The screens depict various people and places around the world. The globe serves as the centerpiece for this outstanding night time display. The show takes place right on the World Showcase lagoon. Be sure to scope out a good place to view the show early!

That wraps up my Epcot Picks. Next week: Animal Kingdom!

Back in the swing of things

Ringing in the New Year brought the holiday season to an end for another year! Christmas music, candy canes and resolutions have now been shelved. It's now time to get back into the swing of things: "life as usual."
Late last week I worked on the first of four blog post of my personal Disney picks. Look for the second installment by Wednesday. This weeks post will contain my picks for Disneys EPCOT. It occured to me while working on the EPCOT piece, that there are several tips I may be able to string together that would generally apply to making the most out of any Disney park. I'll outline it and see if there is enough useful information for an entire post.
Tom also arrived back home from New York last week. Jackpot was like an excited little puppy when Tom arrived. He ran, full speed, in circles from the bedroom into the living room and back again..and again..and again. Once Tom was in the door, our four legged child immediately began jumping up and licking Tom all over the face. Yep..life is getting back to normal! I know the pup is happy--back to those regular L-O-N-G walks around the lake. "Daddy Keith" is not as consistent ( or thrilled for that matter!) with those long walks..that's Toms department!
The last couple of days have been readjusting to the norm. Getting back to those "normal" habits that somehow get lost in the hustle and excitement of the holidays! Although I take delight in all the joy that comes with the holidays, I am grateful to now store the 2008 holiday season under the category "memories" and move foreword. That said, it's time to post this, work on my EPCOT piece..and, oh yeah, decide on what to fix for dinner..dinner for two again. It's nice to be back to "normal."

Disney...Our Place

My Top Disney picks

I recently reconnected with an old classmate who will soon be embarking on a trip to Disney with her family. I thought I would take the opportunity to share some of my personal Disney favorites! With four theme parks, there is a lot to take in! I hope this can lead some people to the "must see" points.
I always stay on property at Disney. Contrary to what many believe, it is actually cheaper! Disney regularly runs specials on rooms during non peak periods.A good source to check on specials and tips is mousesavers.com. Staying on property eliminates the need to pay for parking. It also eliminates the need to be at a bus location at a particular time from the off property resorts that offer bus service to and from Disney. Staying on property, buses will transport you to any and from any of the theme parks. Buses leave about every 20 minutes right outside your chosen Disney resort. Additionally, as a resort guest, you and your family will enjoy the benefits of extra magic hours! Hours specific to parks ( including magic hours) are listed in your check in packet from your resort.
On to those must see points! I always start out at the Magic Kingdom. Yes, there are many attractions geared towards younger kids. Don't let that fool ya! there are numerous cool things for older kids and adults there too! I make it a point to do Space Mountain on every trip! The attraction has the distinction of being the worlds first completely dark, inside roller coaster. A total of 31 rocket trains on two tracks ( no car #13 by the way) make this attraction a favorite among most guest! If you don't mind getting a little wet then you need to head for Splash Mountain, Magic Kingdoms log flume attraction. The attraction is based on the 1946 controversial film "Song of the South" and features brer Rabbit, brer Bear and brer Fox. Beware the laughing place and that final drop! its a doozie! Big Thunder Mountain offers the wooden roller coaster experience. You will sure get shaken up on this train as you go through caves, mines and over hills. The four minute long attraction opened in 1980 and is located in frontier land next to Splash Mountain. For 999 happy haunts, head over to Liberty Square to the haunted Mansion! Last year the Haunted Mansion had an overhaul and was updated. Madame Leota can now be seen free floating! Does her voice sound somewhat familiar? like an evil step mother maybe?? Also added was an upside down staircase and and a bride who takes "till death do us part" very seriously...be sure to check it out, especially if you have not been in a few years. No trip to the Magic Kingdom would be complete without a walk over to adventureland for "Pirates of the Carribean." The 8 1/2 minute boat ride whisks guest into the middle of a port battle and continues to a town full of rowdy pirates pillaging for treasures.Other pirates are engrossed in an auction, making bids on the red head, while others continue their search for Captain Jack Sparrow! and of course, one can't forget- the infamous jail scene. The attraction features over 100 audio-animatronics. Most recently the attraction added animatronics of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). The likeness and realness is absolutely amazing! you are sure to do a double take! Enough adventure? ready for a little R and R? try Mickeys PhilharMagic, located in Fantasyland. Its a wonderful 3-D show extravaganza. By far this is the BEST 3-D show I have seen! It integrates 3-D with other special effects on the largest purpose built 3-D screen ever built. At 150 feet wide, it makes this a definite must see attraction! I'll recommend Tonys on town Square for food! Its Italian cuisine, and hey-you can catch Lady and The Tramp while your waiting to be seated!. For a quick bite, I usually go with Casey's corner on Main street. Hot dogs, french fries..and YES, they even include all the cheese sauce you want for those fries! While strolling the park you might want to consider pin trading.Pin trading is a Disney phenomenon that began in 1999 as part of the millennium celebration and has become a Disney tradition. Guest can trade Disney pins with any cast member wearing a lanyard. Keep in mind, cast members wearing green lanyards only trade with kids 10 and under. Be sure to look for hidden Mickeys all around the park as well.Hidden Mickeys began as an inside joke between Disney imagineers. They can be found virtually anywhere in the park. There is no official listing of EVERY hidden Mickey. Most cast members can point you in the direction of a few of them. My favorite part of the Magic Kingdom experience is the fireworks show. "Wishes" is a phenomenal fireworks and pyrotechnics show set to a story narrated by Jiminy Cricket. Look for Tinker Bell to leap from the castle and fly across the magic Kingdom! Prior to "Wishes" you'll want to catch the Spectro Magic night parade. The lighted parade features numerous brightly lit floats, music and your favorite Disney characters. The parade last approximately 20 minutes. On your way out of the park, look to the 7 seas lagoon for the Electric water pageant. The pageant consist of numerous sea creatures, flags stars and a musical soundtrack. A nice end to a day at the Magic Kingdom!
SO, that's my picks for the Magic Kingdom. I'll get my picks for the remaining three Disney Parks over the next week or so!

Who couldn't love him?

A New Year Quote

“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.”

2008

Here I sit at the end of another year. I can't help thinking back to when I was younger. I used to think the years passed so slowly. I thought I would never get older. At one point I think I had actually convinced myself that I would be in my 20's forever! I lived a very care-free life, giving little thought to consequences or tomorrow: NOTHING bad was going to happen to me; after all, I was invincible...or so I thought! I was living free..but stupid.
Funny how age seems to just creep up on you. The years start passing faster. Thoughts of "forever" and "invincibility" no longer hold that prominent space in once did. No, those days are now long gone!
2008 was a good example of a year that seemed to fly by for me. In all, the past year, though fast, was a good year for me. I like to look back and see what it is I learned, How did I change or grow? I think I learned more about who I really am. It was almost as if a light suddenly lit up in my head. Like a slap in the face, It became clear. It sank into my heart. REALITY...I really am over 40! I have lived a wonderful life and have so many things to be grateful for. I have had the fortune of a very good partner , family and friends, who are always the first to offer unconditional support...even if they disagree with your point of view. Pets? I could not ask for a more gentle, loving dog that is so full of affection...and personality! I have also had the good fortune of making new friends this year. Many of those people are individuals I may well, never meet in person. Just good people who enjoy sharing a little of their lives and knowledge on social networks. Twitter, Facebook...MySpace etc. It really has been amazing online journey for me. Through new online pals I have gained knowledge by the information they share on various topics of interest. Just another of the many things I am grateful for. I guess what I am most grateful for is knowing that , YES..I really am 41. YES, the years really do seem to be going faster. I am not invincible. I am perfectly fine with that now.I can still live care-free..with caution. "Spirit of a boy, wisdom of a man" means so much more now.Life is good. Thank you 2008
